WORDS OF WELCOME

On behalf of the organization committee, I would like to cordially welcome you all to the 10th International Functional Electrical Stimulation Society conference (IFESS 2005) to be held in the Mont Royal Center, Montreal, Canada.  IFESS 2005 is devoted to promoting interdisciplinary discussions between expert researchers, bioengineers and clinicians in the allied fields of Functional Electrical Stimulation, neuroscience, and neurological disability. The conference provides special interest group workshops for discussions of current topics including technological and physiological barriers to success, recipient views regarding acceptance of FES technology and commercial and regulatory success

factors.

The selected papers reflect continuing trends and cover a wide variety of subjects within the field, ranging from stimulation techniques and systems design to numerous applications in several related areas such as deep brain  stimulation, respiration, walking, and bladder and bowel functions. The conference includes keynotes, tutorials, regular and special lecture sessions, and poster sessions on selected aspects of the emerging FES applications

and design methods.

IFESS 2005 will encompass a wide range of special talks given by prominent experts covering key areas of research in which we hope will provide to all attendees a unique forum for the exchange of ideas and results. The Program Committee has assembled an excellent technical program. Many individuals put this program together as a result of hard work and dedication. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members of the Organizing Committee, the Technical Program Committee, the various speakers, our sponsors and most of all the authors for contributing their original work and presenting them at this conference.

I sincerely hope that you will find attending this conference as rewarding as it was preparing it. Also, please enjoy your visit to Montréal.

Mohamad SAWAN, General Chair
