Workshop description: The ODFS® Pace is most commonly used to stimulate the common peroneal nerve and correct foot drop in walking. This workshop will look at applications beyond this, using the ODFS® Pace to stimulate other muscle groups of the lower limb in walking. The muscle groups covered in this workshop will include hamstrings, quadriceps, gluteal and calf muscle stimulation.

Clinically, using FES on these muscle groups can be used to address common issues in gait, for example knee hyperextension, reduced clearance of the limb in swing phase, and reduced strength at the hip and trunk, which can impact on stance phase.

The workshop will be relevant to upper motor neurone conditions including multiple sclerosis, stroke, hereditary spastic paraparesis, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury etc. We will discuss electrode placements for stimulating each of these muscle groups. We will also discuss recommended stimulation parameters for each muscle group and gait deficit, and how to adapt these to time effectively with an individual’s gait pattern.

The workshop will include a practical element and participants will have the opportunity to try some of the FES applications discussed above on themselves. If participants wish to partake in the practical part of the workshop, it is recommended that participants bring shorts or appropriate clothing.
