Workshop description: By the end of the workshop the participants will have an understanding of FES applications in upper limb rehabilitation for neurological patients provided at the Birmingham UK FES clinic.

The workshop will include:

1) A brief summary of Birmingham UK FES service for adults and young people and conditions treated,

2) Goals of treatment and expectation management,

3) An overview of FES devices and their application including use of adjuncts to treatment,

4) Sharing of Birmingham’s upper limb clinical experience and case studies – adults and young people,

5) A demonstration of FES applications for upper limb – shoulder girdle to fingers,

6) Reporting on a case series using FES for upper limb – a comparison study,

7) An overview of the evidence including use of Critical Appraised Topic (CAT) evaluation technique,

8) Discussion on outcome measure tools – pros and cons,

9) Opportunity for question and answer session,

10) Includes integrated practical session during or after presentation – requires appropriate clothing for experiencing FES on trunk, shoulder/shoulder girdle and upper limb distally by participants who are not contraindicated for FES devices.

The target audience would be clinicians with neurological experience and researchers interested in upper limb rehabilitation. Industrial partners are also welcome.
